Isotex building does not collapse

The structural resistance of a building, private or public, in the event of an explosion is not the subject of specific regulations. There is no requirement for particular tests to assess how much and how well a building can withstand the pressure of an explosive event due to, for example, a gas leak or another event impacting the structure, but structural requirements are needed to ensure that solid and robust buildings do not collapse if damaged.

Isotex carried out an important explosion resistance test with a renowned body in Spain, which tested Isotex walls and floors with 42 kg and 85 kg of TNT. The Isotex wood-cement system was not damaged at all.

The structure of an Isotex building is resilient in the event of explosion

The Isotex system was evaluated by Prof. Claudio Ceccoli – distinguished professor at the Department of Structural Engineering of the University of Bologna – in collaboration with the engineer Gilberto Dallavalle. The two scholars demonstrated that the Isotex building does not collapse in the event of an explosion, even if the two corner walls of an intermediate floor fail. The system of vertical and horizontal reinforcements contained in the formwork blocks and connected to the respective floor curbs protects the integrity of the floors above and below the affected floor.

In 2005, the University of Pavia and the Eucentre Laboratory carried out all the specific experimental tests for the formwork blocks required by the Ministerial Guidelines on earthquake safety. Tests were carried out on the performance of the Isotex wall as a beam-wall demonstrating its excellent behaviour. What was studied by Prof. Ceccoli and Engineer Dallavalle: the Isotex structure remains intact even if one or two corner compartments fail due to explosion.

Isotex works perfectly as a beam-wall

Isotex has completed the experiments in collaboration with the University of Pavia to demonstrate that walls made with the Isotex building system work perfectly as wall beams. The tests were carried out on two beams in different sizes.

External and internal load-bearing walls made with Isotex® structural wood cement blocks in a H formation, with a density of 534 ±10% kg/m³ laid dry, staggered by half a block, casting every 5-6 rows, with a single connecting hollow for the concrete.
